Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) :: essays research papers

The organization I have chosen for this essay is CSIS ( Canadian Security Intelligence Service ). CSIS closely resembles The Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) or British Security Intelligence Service. I have chosen this organization because I have great interest in becoming an employee of CSIS in the future. This essay will provide brief history of CSIS, the responsibilities of CSIS for Canada, and the application process for an entry – level position. These will be further discussed in greater detail as the essay goes on. CSIS was created by the passage of an Act of Parliament ( Bill C-9 ) on June 21, 1984. The service began its formal existence on July 16, 1984. Prior to June 21, 1984, security intelligence was collected by the Security service of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Two different Commissions chaired by the Justice Mackenzie in 1969 and Justice McDonald in 1977 recommended that the security intelligence functions be separated from the RCMP and that a civilian service be formed to carry out those functions. Both commissions recognized that the problem of balancing the need for accurate and effective security intelligence with the need to respect democratic rights and freedoms could not be adequately resolved as long as security intelligence responsibilities remained part of the Federal police force. In 1970, following the report of the Mackenzie Commission, John Starnes, a Foreign Service officer with the Department of External Affairs, became the first civilian Director General of the RCMP Security Service. Although the RCMP became more flexible problem arose due to the different natures of security intelligence work and police work. In August 1981, the feral government announced that a security intelligence service, separate from the RCMP would be established. The first legislation to establish the security intelligence service, Bill C-157, â€Å" an Act to Establish the Canadian Security Intelligence Service ( CSIS )† was introduced in Parliament in May 1983. It passed by both Houses of parliament and given Royal Assent in June 1984. CSIS began its formal existence on July 16, 1984 with Ted Finn as Director. In addition to creating a civilian security intelligence service, the Cat also created SIRC, to review the activities of CSIS. CSIS is a government agency dedicated to protecting the national security interests of Canada and safeguarding its citizens. The main objective of the service is to investigate and report on threats to the security of Canada.

In the past you would only see people from ethnic communities wearing Hip Hop clothing, now all races including Asian, Caucasian, etc have accepted the Hip Hop style. The subject matter has also changed. In the past Hip Hop lyrics focused on political and societal frustrations, now Hip Hop lyrics steer more toward provocative content. Hip Hop subject matter consists mostly of the aspirations of wealth, sex, drug use, and criminal activity. During the beginning years the age of the Hip Hop listener was wide spread. It ranged from teens to even adults in their 50’s. Although Hip Hop still has an adult audience, it is now more geared toward younger audiences. Younger listeners are more likely to purchase Hip Hop music and paraphernalia, than the older audience. Hip Hop proves to be the voice of the people that may not be able to speak for themselves in conventional ways. Globalization has allowed many people who would not have the means to speak up, to be able to take center stage. Many believe that globalization will be the end of individuality and creativity. This has been a theory that seems to fail when put up against Hip Hop globalization. Hip Hop Globalization has proven to hybridize communities and music, that in the end forms something that has never been seen before. Globalization may prove that instead of making the world â€Å"flat†, it will create new mountains and craters of creativity that were never imagined.

Chapter Questions On Gender And Gender Equality - 1724 Words

Barbara Kellar COM335 Chapter 1-4 Chapter 1 answers In reading chapter one I found that the definition of gender isn’t really what sex you were born, it is more the sex that you associate yourself with. If you feel that you are female but you were born a male then going by the text your gender would be female. Society tends to group gender by physical looks and not what a person feels they are. I personally feel that gender is what the person feels that they are. If they think they are female, but physically they are male, who am I to tell them they are only male? Feminism is a multi-disciplinary approach to sex and gender equality. Defined through social theories and political activism. Historically, feminism has evolved from the†¦show more content†¦A real life example of this would be a conversation between a mother and her child. With the conversation being about what the child should or shouldn’t do the mother is defining the relationship level and that the mother calls the shots and the child should listen to what they are told. The Intersex Society of North America is a group that was founded in 1993 in an effort to advocate for patients and families who felt they had been harmed by their experiences with the health care system. These patients being people who were born â€Å"different†, being male with female anatomy or female with make anatomy. With having a 16 year old son that identifies himself as a bi-sexual, I feel this book will be greatly educational for me. I accept my child as he is no matter what. But most people in this world do not accept people who identify themselves sexually different then what is considered normal. Although I have an acceptance that most people don’t, I feel that this book will help me accept better other people that identify themselves differently. I feel that feminism will forever be a subject of great debate. There will always be women who fight for more equal rights between men and women. Currently one of the biggest arguments when it comes to feminism is equal pay for equal work. To me personally it means that I don’t have to fight to be able to be strong, and independent. Women from the past have done a great job paving the road
